Beth March

Beth March is a character in Louisa May Alcott's novel *Little Women* (1868), the third of the four March sisters.

She is gentle, shy, and devoted to her family, known for her musical talent and quiet selflessness.

Beth's death from scarlet fever is among the most affecting scenes in American literature, making her name shorthand for a character whose sweetness and early death move readers to tears: She's the Beth March of the story—you know she's doomed from the start.
