übermensch

Beyond ordinary humanity

Übermensch is a German word meaning "overman" or "superman," introduced by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche to describe an ideal human who creates their own values and transcends conventional morality.

In casual use, it sometimes describes anyone of exceptional ability or achievement: He fancies himself an übermensch of the startup world.

The lowercase form is uncommon in English. (Capitalized Übermensch is more standard.)
