water voles
Semiaquatic burrowing mammals
Water voles are semiaquatic rodents native to Europe and parts of Asia, living along riverbanks, streams, and wetlands.
They burrow into banks and feed on vegetation.
Often confused with rats, water voles are rounder with shorter ears and furry tails.
In Britain, they're associated with the character Ratty from *The Wind in the Willows*, though he was actually a water vole.
