unfocusing

Letting attention drift

Unfocusing is the act of allowing something to become less sharp or concentrated.

Eyes unfocus when they stop fixing on a particular point, often during daydreaming or fatigue.

Attention unfocuses when it drifts from a task.

A camera lens unfocuses when it loses sharpness on its subject.

The term can describe either an involuntary process or a deliberate relaxation of concentration: I caught myself unfocusing during the lecture.
