underground exploration
Subterranean passage investigation
Underground exploration is the practice of investigating subterranean spaces—caves, mines, tunnels, sewers, and other structures beneath the earth's surface.
The term covers both scientific pursuits like speleology and recreational activities like urban exploration of abandoned infrastructure: The group specializes in underground exploration of Victorian-era drainage systems.
It can also refer to surveying or mapping work done before construction or mining operations.
