underground cable
Subterranean power line
An underground cable is an electrical or communications cable buried beneath the earth's surface rather than strung on poles.
Underground cables serve power distribution, telecommunications, and data transmission in areas where overhead lines are impractical or undesirable: The city replaced aging overhead wires with underground cable.
They require protective conduits and are more expensive to install but less vulnerable to weather damage.
