time of possession
Holding the ball
Time of possession is a sports statistic measuring how long a team controls the ball or puck during a game.
In American football, it tracks actual playing time when the offense has the ball; in soccer and hockey, it reflects percentage of time controlling play.
Teams with longer time of possession typically dictate pace and limit opponents' scoring opportunities: They won the time of possession battle but still lost the game.
