termagants

Loud, scolding women

Termagants are quarrelsome, scolding women—shrews.

The word comes from a fictional deity in medieval mystery plays, portrayed as violent and overbearing.

The singular termagant now applies almost exclusively to women perceived as loud, domineering, and ill-tempered: His mother-in-law was a termagant who ruled the household through sheer force of will.
