The state of being tattered—worn, ragged, or hanging in shreds.
The word applies to fabric and clothing but extends to anything showing similar deterioration: the tatteredness of the old flag, the tatteredness of his argument.
A rare and somewhat awkward noun; *tatters* or *ragged condition* usually serves better.
