taking a knee
Gridiron anthem protest
Taking a knee is kneeling on one knee as a gesture of protest, most associated with American football player Colin Kaepernick's 2016 protests against racial injustice during the national anthem.
The phrase now extends to any symbolic kneeling: Players across the league were taking a knee in solidarity.
In sports, taking a knee also refers to a quarterback kneeling to run out the clock.
