sweetness and light
Gentle charm together
Sweetness and light describes a state of harmony, pleasantness, and reason—or the appearance of such.
The phrase originated with Jonathan Swift and was later popularized by Matthew Arnold to represent the ideal combination of beauty and intelligence in culture.
Today it often appears ironically to describe someone putting on an excessively pleasant front: She was all sweetness and light until the boss left the room.
The phrase frequently follows "all" in this mildly skeptical usage.
