sugar-coated barb
Honeyed verbal sting
A sugar-coated barb is a hostile remark disguised as something pleasant or complimentary.
The criticism or insult is delivered with a smile, wrapped in politeness, or buried in a compliment: She said my presentation was "brave," which felt like a sugar-coated barb.
The sweetness makes the sting harder to call out directly.
