stoutness

Thickness of frame

Stoutness is the quality of being stout—thick, sturdy, or solidly built.

It can describe physical bulk in people, often a polite way of noting someone is overweight: His stoutness made squeezing into the airplane seat difficult.

Stoutness also applies to objects built for strength: the stoutness of the oak beams.

In older usage, stoutness meant courage or resolve: the stoutness of their resistance.
