stopgaps

Interim solutions only

Stopgaps are temporary solutions or substitutes used until something better or more permanent becomes available.

The word implies inadequacy—a stopgap measure keeps things functioning but doesn't truly solve the problem: We hired temps as stopgaps until we could fill the positions permanently.

The singular stopgap works as both noun and adjective: a stopgap solution.
