star ruby
Six-rayed red gem
A star ruby is a ruby that displays asterism—a star-shaped pattern of light that appears to glide across the surface when the stone is moved.
The effect comes from needle-like inclusions of rutile within the crystal, which reflect light in intersecting bands, typically forming a six-rayed star.
Star rubies are cut as cabochons rather than faceted to best display this phenomenon: The star ruby in her ring seemed to glow from within.
