spiritual sequel
Unofficial creative continuation
A spiritual sequel is a creative work that continues the themes, style, or spirit of an earlier work without being an official continuation.
Unlike direct sequels, spiritual sequels lack narrative connection to their predecessors—different characters, settings, or intellectual property—but feel like extensions of the same vision: BioShock is widely considered a spiritual sequel to System Shock 2.
The term appears most often in video game and film discussion.
