spent nuclear fuel

Depleted fission material

Spent nuclear fuel is fuel that has been used in a nuclear reactor until it can no longer efficiently sustain a chain reaction.

Though "spent," it remains highly radioactive and thermally hot, requiring careful storage in cooling pools or dry casks.

The material poses long-term disposal challenges because some radioactive isotopes persist for thousands of years.

Also called spent fuel or used nuclear fuel.
