speculative thinking
Pondering without proof
Speculative thinking is reasoning about possibilities rather than established facts—exploring what might be, could be, or would be under different conditions.
It involves hypotheticals, thought experiments, and imaginative projection beyond current knowledge: Speculative thinking about alien life drives much of astrobiology.
The term can carry either positive connotations (creative, visionary) or negative ones (ungrounded, impractical), depending on context.
