skipping a beat
Cardiac rhythm hiccup
Skipping a beat describes a momentary pause or flutter, originally of the heart.
A heartbeat that skips feels like a brief interruption in rhythm.
The phrase extends to any sudden catch or hesitation caused by surprise, fear, or attraction: My heart skipped a beat when I saw her.
Something that continues without skipping a beat proceeds smoothly despite potential disruption.
