sham marriages
Unions for visas
A sham marriage is a marriage entered into for purposes other than genuine partnership—typically to circumvent immigration law, gain citizenship, or secure benefits.
The couple may never live together or intend to build a life as spouses: They arrested him for arranging sham marriages between citizens and visa overstayers.
Also called a marriage of convenience, though that term can apply to any union based on practical rather than romantic considerations.
