second place finishers
Almost won it
Second place finishers are competitors who come in behind the winner—close enough to medal or place, but not quite victorious.
The phrase often carries a faint consolation-prize quality: Second place finishers don't get endorsement deals.
In competitions with elimination rounds, second place finishers are typically the runners-up who lost in the final.
