running in

Making quick visit

Running in is the process of gradually breaking in a new engine or mechanical device by operating it gently at first.

The practice allows moving parts to wear together and settle before being subjected to full stress: The manual recommends running in the engine for the first 500 miles.

Also called breaking in.
