retail sales tax
Consumer transaction charge
A retail sales tax is a consumption tax collected by merchants at the point of sale and remitted to a government.
Unlike value-added taxes collected at each stage of production, retail sales tax applies only to the final transaction with consumers.
In the United States, retail sales taxes are set by states and localities rather than the federal government: The retail sales tax in Texas is 6.25 percent, but local additions can push it higher.
