reparation payments
Mandated damage compensation
Reparation payments are compensation paid by a defeated nation to the victors after a war, intended to cover damages and costs of the conflict.
Germany's reparation payments after World War I, imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, became economically and politically destabilizing.
The term also applies to compensation for historical injustices: reparation payments for slavery, reparations for Japanese American internment.
