remand center

Awaiting trial lockup

A remand center is a facility where people accused of crimes are held while awaiting trial or sentencing.

The term is used primarily in British and Commonwealth legal systems, equivalent to what Americans might call a detention center or jail.

Unlike prisons, which house convicted offenders serving sentences, remand centers hold individuals whose cases are still pending in court.

He spent three months in a remand center before his trial date.
