ray florets
Daisy's outer blooms
Ray florets are the petal-like flowers that ring the edge of a composite flower head, like those in daisies and sunflowers.
Each apparent "petal" is actually a separate small flower with a strap-shaped extension.
They surround the disc florets that form the dense center: The ray florets had fallen off, leaving just the seed head.
