rat kings
Knotted tail cluster
A rat king is a cluster of rats whose tails have become tangled and fused together, supposedly trapping them as a single mass.
Historical accounts describe these grotesque knots found in attics or cellars, though their authenticity is disputed—some may be hoaxes or misidentified specimens.
The term extends to anything unnaturally entangled or interconnected: The cables behind the server were a rat king of extension cords and ethernet.
In fantasy and horror, a rat king may be a supernatural entity commanding rats or a hive-mind creature.
