purity movement

Chastity promotion campaign

The purity movement is a Christian evangelical campaign promoting sexual abstinence before marriage, prominent in American youth culture from the 1990s through 2000s.

Associated with purity rings, purity balls (formal dances where daughters pledge virginity to their fathers), and abstinence-only sex education.

Critics argue it promotes shame around sexuality and disproportionately burdens girls: She grew up in the purity movement and struggled with guilt long after marriage.
