premeditate

Plot in advance

To premeditate is to plan or consider an action beforehand, especially a harmful one.

The word appears most often in legal contexts: premeditated murder is killing with prior intent, distinguished from crimes of passion or accident.

Outside law, premeditated suggests calculated deliberation: a premeditated insult, nothing about the evening felt premeditated.
