pot shots

Unfair random attacks

Pot shots are casual or opportunistic shots taken without careful aim, originally at game killed merely "for the pot" rather than for sport.

The term now usually describes critical remarks directed at an easy target: The candidate took pot shots at his opponent's record.

Taking pot shots suggests attacks that are cheap, easy, or unsporting rather than substantive engagement.
