poor things

Objects of sympathy

Poor things is an expression of sympathy or pity, usually said about someone (or something) in an unfortunate situation: The kids were exhausted—poor things had been traveling all day.

It can be genuine compassion or slightly condescending, depending on tone.

Sometimes used sarcastically about those who don't deserve sympathy: The billionaires had to pay more taxes, poor things.
