penalty kills
Down-a-man stretches
Penalty kills are the periods in hockey when a team plays short-handed after a player is sent to the penalty box.
The penalized team must defend against the opposing team's power play, typically four skaters against five, until the penalty expires or the other team scores.
A team with a strong penalty kill neutralizes the disadvantage effectively.
