Oven locks are safety mechanisms that prevent an oven door from being opened, either during a self-cleaning cycle when temperatures reach extreme levels, or as a child safety feature to keep little hands out.
Most are controlled by a lever or electronic switch: The oven lock engaged automatically when I started the cleaning cycle.
