outdoor cats
Yard-dwelling feline pets
Outdoor cats are domestic cats allowed to roam freely outside rather than being kept exclusively indoors.
The term often appears in debates about cat welfare and wildlife conservation, since outdoor cats face risks from traffic and predators while also hunting birds and small animals: Outdoor cats have shorter lifespans on average.
Some owners compromise with supervised outdoor time or enclosed "catios."
