off the reservation
Outside sanctioned boundaries
Off the reservation means acting outside expected boundaries or departing from an established position.
The phrase originated from U.S. policies confining Native Americans to designated lands—leaving the reservation meant going where you weren't supposed to be.
Now it describes someone who has strayed from their group's orthodoxy or chain of command: The senator went off the reservation when she criticized her own party's platform.
The expression carries colonial baggage that makes some speakers avoid it.
