merry men

Loyal outlaw followers

Merry men are the loyal followers of a legendary outlaw, most famously Robin Hood's band in Sherwood Forest.

The phrase evokes camaraderie among rebels or rogues living outside the law: Robin Hood and his merry men robbed from the rich.

Used loosely, it can describe any group of companions, often with ironic or affectionate undertones: He arrived with his merry men in tow.
