meatless Friday
Fish dinner tradition
Meatless Friday is the Catholic practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays, especially during Lent, as a form of penance commemorating Christ's crucifixion.
Once obligatory year-round for Catholics, the requirement was relaxed in 1966 to apply mainly to Lenten Fridays, though many still observe it weekly: Fish fry fundraisers grew out of meatless Friday traditions.
