lost rivers

Streams gone underground

Lost rivers are streams that once flowed aboveground but now run beneath city streets, buried in culverts or sewers as urban development spread over them.

Many cities have these hidden waterways: London's Fleet River, New York's Minetta Brook.

The term also applies to rivers that disappear underground naturally through porous rock, reemerging elsewhere or not at all.
