lost play
Missing theatrical work
A lost play is a dramatic work known to have existed but no longer surviving in complete form.
Many plays from antiquity—Greek tragedies, Roman comedies—are known only through fragments, references, or titles in other sources.
Shakespeare himself has lost plays: Love's Labour's Won and Cardenio are documented but haven't survived.
The term applies to any era's theatrical works destroyed by fire, neglect, or time.
