live one

Grifter's ideal target

A live one is someone easily deceived or exploited—a sucker, a mark, a gullible target.

The phrase comes from fishing and hunting, where a live one is a catch still moving.

Gamblers, con artists, and salespeople use it for someone who seems ready to part with money: The poker sharks spotted a live one at the table.

It can also mean someone lively or entertaining: She's a real live one at parties.
