library fines

Borrower penalty charges

Library fines are fees charged when borrowed materials are returned late.

The traditional penalty—a few cents per day—was meant to encourage timely returns so others could access the collection.

Many libraries have eliminated fines, finding they discourage use without improving return rates: I stopped going to the library because I owed too much in fines.
