letting down

Breaking a promise

Letting down is failing to meet someone's expectations or hopes.

You let someone down when you disappoint them: I promised I'd be there, and I really let her down.

The phrase also has a literal sense of lowering something: letting down the drawbridge, letting down the hem of a skirt.

For nursing mothers, letting down refers to the release of milk.
