lets slip

Divulges without intending

To let slip is to reveal something unintentionally, usually information meant to be kept secret: She let slip that they were planning a surprise party.

The image is of something escaping one's grip—a secret slipping out before you can catch it.

Less commonly, to let slip can mean to release deliberately: let slip the dogs of war.
