leap years
Calendar's periodic corrections
Leap years are years with an extra day—February 29th—added to keep the calendar aligned with Earth's orbit around the sun.
In the Gregorian calendar, leap years occur every four years, with exceptions for century years not divisible by 400.
The term extends figuratively to anything occurring at long intervals: I clean out the garage every leap year.
