lawful orders
Authorized official directives
Lawful orders are commands from a legitimate authority that comply with applicable law.
The phrase appears most often in military contexts, where service members must obey lawful orders but may—and sometimes must—refuse unlawful ones: Following orders is no defense if the orders were unlawful.
The distinction matters in courts-martial and war crimes tribunals.
Outside the military, lawful orders may come from police, courts, or regulatory bodies.
