inoperability

State of brokenness

Inoperability is the state of being unable to function or be put into operation.

In medicine, it describes a condition—usually a tumor or disease—that cannot be treated surgically: The cancer's inoperability left chemotherapy as the only option.

More broadly, it refers to systems or equipment that cannot work: The inoperability of the backup generator during the outage caused significant losses.
