incubuses
Demons causing nightmares
Incubuses is a plural of incubus, a demon in medieval folklore believed to lie upon sleeping women and have sex with them.
The word extends to anything that weighs heavily or oppresses: The debt was an incubus on the family for years.
The Latin plural incubi is also used, especially in folkloric or academic contexts.
