high-altitude training
Thin-air athletic preparation
High-altitude training is athletic conditioning performed at elevations where reduced oxygen forces the body to adapt—typically above 7,000 feet.
The physiological response includes increased red blood cell production, which can improve endurance when competing at lower elevations.
Athletes may train high, sleep low or use altitude tents to simulate the effect: She did her high-altitude training in Colorado before the marathon.
