high-altitude lake
Alpine water body
A high-altitude lake is a body of water situated in mountainous terrain, typically above 2,000 meters elevation.
These lakes often form in glacially carved basins or volcanic craters and tend to be cold, clear, and oligotrophic due to limited nutrient input.
We hiked for hours to reach the high-altitude lake nestled below the peak.
Such lakes support specialized ecosystems adapted to harsh conditions including intense UV radiation, low oxygen levels, and dramatic temperature swings.
