have a clue

Know what's happening

To have a clue is to have any idea or understanding about something.

The phrase appears almost exclusively in the negative: I don't have a clue where she went, He hasn't got a clue what he's doing.

Someone who doesn't have a clue is ignorant or incompetent.

The rare affirmative use is often ironic or defensive: I do have a clue, actually.
